Once the placements are near, students are overwhelmed with what to choose. A majority of students do not want to continue working in their core undergrad fields after graduation; they prefer non-core jobs.
What is a non-core job?
A non-core job is where you have to use a completely different skillset from what you have already studied. It is a job at a company that focuses on a field other than the one you’ve got a degree in i.e. if a CSE graduate works as a consultant, then it’s a non-core job for him/her.
Core vs Non-core
Core jobs are those jobs that are directly related to your field of study & non-core jobs are those jobs that are not directly related to your field of study. Core companies focus on students who are well-versed in programming skills. Whereas the Non-core companies focus more on logical reasoning, critical reasoning, aptitude, and communication skills. Opportunities
Once you choose the non-core exit, you have plenty of opportunities to consider.
- Business Analyst – BAs are responsible for creating new models that support business decisions by working closely with financial reporting and IT teams to establish initiatives and strategies to improve importing and to optimize costs.
- Operation manager – An operations manager is a key part of a management team and oversees high-level HR duties, such as attracting talent and setting training standards and hiring procedures.
- Data analyst – A data analyst collects, processes and performs statistical analyses on large dataset. They discover how data can be used to answer questions and solve problems.
- Content writer – A content writer is someone who specializes in producing relevant, engaging written content for websites.
- Blog writer – Bloggers write, edit, post, and promote the content on their web pages or websites. They generate and pitch ideas, compose and edit posts, market posts to readers, and conduct research
- Banking and Government exams – Exams which give people access for bank and government jobs.
- Consultant – consultants provide expert opinions, analysis, and recommendations to organizations or individuals, based on their own expertise
Why prefer non-core over core jobs
About 42% of the students are inclined towards having a non-core job. Core sector still lags behind with a share of about 23%. Out of all the students, 42% have said that they want jobs for good placements and high salary. And among those who opt for the non-core sector; majority have confessed that they opt for it only because of high monetary returns. This again raises a question on our education system and our society, where the best minds of the nation are forced to take up certain sectors only because these fields are much more developed than others in our country. Follow your passion
We cannot categorize a whole company as non-core because it can be core for some, as well as non core for others at the same time. If we look further even college campuses have witnessed the trend of change in Jobs from Core Sectors to more on Non-Core Sector Jobs, and engineers who are working in Non-Core sector jobs sometimes find it more exhilarating to work in a varied environment.

Most of you would have chosen Engineering on parental pressures or other factors. What’s done is done, but it’s not too late to decide what your life after graduation is going to be. It doesn’t mean that we only have to be IT professionals after Computer Science engineering. There is a wide range of opportunities to look for, so don’t let others dictate your life, go out, explore and look for what your heart desires and go for it.
